Combating Hair Texturism With These Kid-Friendly Summer Tips

It’s been long recognized that certain hair textures are seen as more desirable, easier to manage or better than others, which has become known as Texturism. This term is defined as discrimination against hair texture where certain hair types, especially those that are coarser or more tightly curled, are considered less attractive or professional than looser curl patterns.

Tutorials directed towards Black girls and  women with 4B and 4C hair tend to center around ways to “stretch” or “define” their hair. And while, according to 99% Invisible, the consumption of hair relaxers is down 30% since 2011, the desire for women of color to loosen or “improve” their hair texture is evidenced by the number of styling products for textured hair that promise to do just that.

For Black children, especially girls who swim in these seas of media influences, these ideas can negatively impact their self image, driving them to unconsciously buy into social constructs. As a result, Black children, particularly Black girls who seek to manipulate their 4B or 4C hair to achieve a looser curl pattern, may subconsciously buy into the idea that their kinky, coily hair is less desirable than straighter or other textures. The same can be said of those who go to great lengths to “lay their edges down.”

From a broader cultural perspective, recent years have seen a rise in Black people reevaluating  their attitudes about their hair, and biased beauty standards-opting instead to prioritize health over harmful manipulation as a way to counter cultural bias ingrained in American culture.

For parents and caregivers, modeling self acceptance through teaching proper hair health sets a path to honor themselves, their culture, and self acceptance. In this spirit, here are simple, yet impactful ways to help your child care for their beautiful tresses while instilling long-term hair love just in time for the summer.

Honoring each strand with love this summer

If your child has coily, kinky curls like Aaliyah, then you are well aware that the warmer weather demands an updated hair routine that maintains nourishment, heat-protection, and low-maintenance without sacrificing style!

Wash-day detangling tips for healthy mini strands

Detangling will always be a vital part of the wash day process and is an important first-step in teaching and preparing the little ones to cherish and respect their coils.

Hair-combing can be painful for children as well as their parents. Finding the right balance of moisturizing, nourishing products that are gentle, nontoxic, and safe for children can be daunting. Pay close attention to hidden drying ingredients packed full of alcohols, petroleum, and mineral oils are going to make it difficult to maintain their curly mane. Opt for organic and water-based moisturizers, preferably ones with super slip that loosens knots and tangles and eliminates teary wash day drama.

If your little one is ready to transition to handling their own wash days, the summer break is a great time to ease them into that responsibility.

Tip: Set your child on the path to learning how to care for their hair with a wash n’ go routine, teaching them the importance of why natural and hydrating leave-in conditioners and clean, cleansing shampoos work to bring out the beauty of their hair.

Protective styles are great, but not too tight

Irreversible damage like too tight braids can start at a young age, so be kind to their temples. To avoid breakage while teaching a valuable lesson of self-love, encourage your child to accept their coily baby hairs and roots. This can eliminate the overuse of toxic products and scalp build up.

If you plan to use a protective style, applying a non-toxic oil certified by the USDA to be safe for children and babies. When used on hair, combing becomes smooth and easy, and leaves hair shiny and healthy.

Bonus tip: Minimize braided styles that pull your child’s hair up into ponytails if you know they’re rough sleepers. These styles can cause breakage around their hairline while they’re visiting dream land.

Perm-rod set for summer curls

The beauty, versatility and simplicity of a perm rod set make it a go-to for your little one that is both heatless and super cute. From short to long strands, add a great perm rod set, and watch how hair can dramatically change overnight.

While this style can be installed at home, it is a meticulous process that requires patience and the RIGHT kind of products, such as moisturizing kid-friendly mousse to ensure curls are shiny, long-lasting, and defined.

Tip: If you’re looking for the right products, look for foams or mousses that include hydrating natural ingredients, such as Aloe Leaf to keep curls moist and hydrated without the crunch. Additionally, products with natural humectants are also important as they work to combat humidity while strengthening hair and leave hair soft for touchable, beautiful curls.
