Power of Representation in Toys: Building Confidence and Diversity Through Play

Discover why representation in toys matters for childhood development. Learn how inclusive play fosters confidence, diversity, and a sense of belonging for every child.

Every new year arrives with the same energy: new goals, new plans, new promises to us. But if we’re being honest, this year feels less about adding more, and much more about choosing better. Especially when it comes to our kids.

Because somewhere between raising confident humans and trying not to repeat what didn’t quite work for us, many of us are realizing something important: the smallest choices often carry the biggest meaning. Sometimes, those choices appear in the toy aisle.

Play Is Where Identity Sneaks In
Kids don’t play just to pass time; they play to make sense of the world. Through dolls and stories, they imagine who they are, who they can be, and what feels possible. When a child sees herself reflected in play, her skin tone, her hair, her energy, her curiosity, and confidence doesn’t need to be explained. It simply appears. That’s not heavy, that’s joyful.

For decades, representation in toys was treated as an extra—something nice to have, something niche. But today’s parents know better. We’re not looking for toys that teach our kids who to be—we’re looking for toys that affirm who they already are.

Why Corage Dolls Exist
Corage Dolls was born from this very truth. Founded by Flora Ekpe-Idang, our company’s goal is to address a painful gap in the toy industry: the lack of authentic representation for girls of color. Studies show that multicultural dolls make up less than 30% of toy shelves, leaving countless children without positive reflections of themselves. This absence isn’t trivial, it shapes identity, confidence, and self-worth.

Flora’s inspiration came after watching the documentary Girl Like Me, which revisited the historic “doll test.” Black children were asked to choose between a Black doll and a white doll when assigning positive traits. Most chose the white doll—a heartbreaking indicator of internalized bias that persists even decades later. That moment stayed with Flora, eventually sparking the mission: to create dolls that celebrate diversity, affirm beauty, and inspire limitless possibilities.

Our Mission And Values
Corage Dolls isn’t just about toys—it’s about transformation. Our mission is clear: elevate, educate, and encourage girls of color to be unstoppable. We do this through:

  • Authenticity: Dolls that reflect real features—skin tones, hair textures, and body types—so every child feels seen.

  • Development: Career-themed books accompanying each doll, introducing kids to fields like STEM, entrepreneurship, and activism.

  • Sistership: The #CorageCrew, a growing network of parents, educators, and advocates committed to empowering girls.

Our core values, Cultivate Courage, Embrace Diversity, Activate Empathy, and Continuously Learn & Grow, aren’t just words; they’re woven into every product and initiative.

Why This Matters To Parents
There’s a special kind of joy in finding a doll that feels right. It’s not dramatic, it’s quiet but powerful. It’s the moment you realize: This reflects my child. This aligns with my values. This is something I’m truly proud to give. That pride matters. Because when parents feel good about what they’re offering, those moments linger. They become traditions, favorites, and stories that kids carry forward.

New Year, Same Magic—Just More Intention
We don’t need to overhaul everything this year. Sometimes, making a shift simply means choosing to play that reflects your child’s world, stories that spark curiosity and confidence, and joy that feels intentional. That’s how cycles change, not loudly, but lovingly and intentionally.

Corage Dolls makes confident play easy. They live at the intersection of imagination, representation, and joy, helping girls see themselves clearly and parents feel proud of what they’re passing down.

As we honor our mission and continue to grow, we’re grateful for the fellowship of our community and excited to welcome all our new #CorageCrew members.
